Open Recreation Program

This program is targeted for kids of all experience levels, including ones that have never played soccer before.  This program does not require any tryouts so everybody is placed on a team as long as there is room.  Games are played on Saturdays between other teams from Region 64 as well as some other local teams from the South Bay in our Area (www.ayso2j.org).  Game times vary each week and are usually some time between 9am - 2pm.

When you register, you are asked what days (Mon-Fri) your child is available to practice during the week (for ages 6 and up).  We try and match your child to a team that meets your schedule to the extent possible, but this is not guaranteed.

AYSO Philosophies

This program follows the six philosophies set by the National AYSO organization:

  • Everyone Plays - Our program's goal is for kids to play soccer so every player on every team must play at least 50% of every game.  In Region 64, we strive for 75% playing time for each player.
  • Balanced Teams - Each year we form new teams as evenly balanced as possible because it's more fun and a better learning experience when teams of similar ability play. It allows for each player to gain the experience of a wide variety of teammates of different skill levels.
  •  Open Registration - The Open Recreation program is open to all children who want to register and play soccer. Interest and enthusiasm are the only criteria for playing. There are no elimination try-outs and nobody gets cut.
  •  Positive Coaching - Encouragement of player effort provides for greater enjoyment for the players and leads to better-skilled and better-motivated players.
  •  Good Sportsmanship - We strive to create a positive environment based on mutual respect rather than a win-at-all-costs attitude, and our program is designed to instill good sportsmanship in every facet of AYSO.
  •  Player Development - We believe that all players should be able to develop their soccer skills and knowledge to the best of their abilities, both individually and as members of a team, in order to maximize their enjoyment of the game.

VIP Program

AYSO is proud to offer a very special program for children with physical or mental disabilities. Our VIP (Very Important Player) program provides a safe, fun environment with trained coaches and volunteers who facilitate an enriching experience for players and their families.

Buddies assist during the games in which players learn soccer while meeting new friends, having fun and increasing skills and self-esteem. Players and their families, along with the volunteers, enjoy the complete AYSO experience – team uniforms, scoring goals, cheering from the sidelines, and the list goes on!  The VIP season runs from September 9 thru November 18, 2018.

Volunteering

AYSO is a volunteer-run organization. Coaches, referees and administrators are volunteers. Over 125,000 parents, neighbors, relatives and friends lend their time and talents so that each child gets a terrific AYSO experience.  AYSO has developed special training that helps parents who may have little or no soccer experience quickly gain the age-appropriate knowledge and skills they need to be effective coaches and referees. It only takes a few hours to become qualified as an introductory-level coach or referee. But if you're not able to commit even that much time, there are many small jobs you can help with. Even a couple of hours each season are an important contribution to your team and Region!
