AYSO is a volunteer-run organization. Coaches, referees and administrators are volunteers. Over 125,000 parents, neighbors, relatives and friends lend their time and talents so that each child gets a terrific AYSO experience. AYSO has developed special training that helps parents who may have little or no soccer experience quickly gain the age-appropriate knowledge and skills they need to be effective coaches and referees. It only takes a few hours to become qualified as an introductory-level coach or referee.
If you are interested in signing up as a coach, referee, 8U official, team manager, field liner, goal coordinator, or board member, you can choose this when you register your player. See the
Background Checks and
Discounted Registration sections below for more detail. If you have any questions, please email
[email protected]
Training will be provided for all of these roles. Current training dates are as follows:
- Head/Assistant Coach training: TBA
- Team Manager training: TBA
- Field Lining and Goal Coordinator training: TBA
- 8U Official training: TBA
- Regional Referee training: TBA
When you signup for these roles, you will be contacted with additional information on training schedules and pre-requisites.
We offer additional discounts for registration for the following volunteer roles:

How to Volunteer section of the website to find a list of volunteer requirements and directions on how to access/complete them.

The safety of the players is a primary concern. Because of that, the following volunteer roles that involve close proximity to players require background checks AND fingerprinting to be performed when signing up to volunteer for that role:
- Head Coach
- Referee
- U8 Official
- Assistant Coach
- Team Manager
- Board Member
The background check is performed by separately by an AYSO National vetted vendor as part of the
registration process. Fingerprinting is only required once for any AYSO-affiliated program. If you had been fingerprinted in a prior season for any AYSO-affiliated program, it is not required again.
This program is targeted for kids of all experience levels, including ones that have never played soccer before. This program does not require any tryouts so everybody is placed on a team as long as there is room. Games are played on Saturdays between other teams from Region 64 as well as some other local teams (for 10U Division and up) from the South Bay in our Area (www.ayso2j.org). Game times vary each weekend and are usually some time between 9am - 3pm for 8U Divisions and above. For 8U Divisions and up, once the weekday practice schedule is determined (usually about a week or two before the season starts), they will remain the same throughout the season, unless a practice needs to be moved or canceled due to unforeseen circumstances.
When you register, you are asked what days (Mon-Fri) your child is available to practice during the week (for age groups 8U and above). We try and match your child to a team that meets your schedule to the extent possible, but this is not guaranteed. You will be contacted about a week before the start of the season to let you know your player's team and schedule details.
NOTE: Practice schedules will not be known until a week before the start of the season and are dependent on volunteer coach schedules and field availability.
This program follows the six philosophies set by the National AYSO organization:
- Everyone Plays - Our program's goal is for kids to play soccer so every player on every team must play at least 50% of every game. In Region 64, we strive for 75% playing time for each player.
- Balanced Teams - Each year we form new teams as evenly balanced as possible because it's more fun and a better learning experience when teams of similar ability play. It allows for each player to gain the experience of a wide variety of teammates of different skill levels.
- Open Registration - The Open Recreation program is open to all children who want to register and play soccer. Interest and enthusiasm are the only criteria for playing. There are no elimination try-outs and nobody gets cut.
- Positive Coaching - Encouragement of player effort provides for greater enjoyment for the players and leads to better-skilled and better-motivated players.
- Good Sportsmanship - We strive to create a positive environment based on mutual respect rather than a win-at-all-costs attitude, and our program is designed to instill good sportsmanship in every facet of AYSO.
- Player Development - We believe that all players should be able to develop their soccer skills and knowledge to the best of their abilities, both individually and as members of a team, in order to maximize their enjoyment of the game.

The following table depicts the prices for the various age groups for the Open Recreation Program. The prices shown include a non-refundable, per-player annual membership fee of $20 mandated by AYSO National and a non-refundable, per-transaction fee of $2.75. The membership fee is required to participate in any AYSO sanctioned event and covers any AYSO program from August 2022 thru July 2023, so if you register for an AYSO program in Fall 2022, you will not be charged this fee for any Spring 2023 program you register for. The $2.75 per-transaction fee is charged per payment transaction, so if you are registering more than one player and you register them all at once (meaning you make one payment for all the registrations), you will only be charged the fee once. If you register them separately (meaning you pay for each player in a separate transaction), you will be charged the fee for each payment you make.
The non-refundable portion of each player's registration fee is $42.75 for all programs. The refund will be total amount paid minus $42.75, if the request is received before noon Friday September 9, 2022. To request a refund, send an email to [email protected] The refund will be made to the credit card that was used to pay the registration fee.
No refunds after 12 noon on September 9, 2022.
AYSO is proud to offer a very special program for children with physical or mental special needs. Our VIP (Very Important Player) program provides a safe, fun environment with trained coaches and volunteers who facilitate an enriching experience for players and their families.
Buddies assist during the games in which players learn soccer while meeting new friends, having fun and increasing skills and self-esteem. Players and their families, along with the volunteers, enjoy the complete AYSO experience – team uniforms, scoring goals, cheering from the sidelines, and the list goes on!
- The VIP season runs from September 11, 2022 thru November 13, 2022
- The teams meet every Sunday 1:30pm at Creekside Park in Cupertino
- For players ages 5 and older
The price for the VIP Program for the Fall 2022 season is $72.75 which includes a non-refundable, per-player annual membership fee of $20 mandated by AYSO National and a non-refundable, per-transaction fee of $2.75 . The membership fee is required to participate in any AYSO sanctioned event and covers any AYSO program within August 2022 thru July 2023, so if you register in any AYSO program in Fall 2022, you will not be charged this fee for any Spring 2023 program you register for (i.e. your price will be $20 less) . The per-transaction fee is charged per transaction, so if you are registering more than one player and you register them all at once (meaning you make one payment for all the registrations), you will only be charged the fee once. If you register them separately (meaning you pay for each player in a separate transaction), you will be charged the fee for each payment you make.
