Volunteering

AYSO is a volunteer-run organization. Coaches, referees and administrators are volunteers. Over 125,000 parents, neighbors, relatives and friends lend their time and talents so that each child gets a terrific AYSO experience. AYSO has developed special training that helps parents who may have little or no soccer experience quickly gain the age-appropriate knowledge and skills they need to be effective coaches and referees. It only takes a few hours to become qualified as an introductory-level coach or referee.

If you are interested in signing up as a coach, referee, 8U official, team manager, field liner, goal coordinator, or board member, you can select this when you register your player. See the Background Checks and Discounted Registration sections below for more detail. If you have any questions, please email [email protected]

Volunteer Training Schedule

Training will be provided for all of these roles. Current training dates are as follows:
  • Head/Assistant Coach training: TBA
  • Team Manager training: TBA
  • Field Lining and Goal Coordinator training: TBA
  • 8U Official training: TBA
  • Regional Referee training: TBA
When you signup for these roles, you will be contacted with additional information on training schedules and pre-requisites.

Discounted Registration

We offer additional discounts for registration for the following volunteer roles:

Click in the 'How to Volunteer section of the website to find a list of volunteer requirements and directions on how to access/complete them.

If you were a head/assistant coach for the Fall 2023 season and had completed all the required training and certifications and requisite activities, email [email protected] to receive a discount coupon for the Spring 2024 season. If you were a referee or 8U official for the Fall 2023 season and had completed all the required training and certifications and requisite activities, email [email protected] to receive a discount coupon for the Spring 2024 season.

Background Checks

The safety of the players is a primary concern. Because of that, the following volunteer roles that involve close proximity to players require background checks AND fingerprinting to be performed when signing up to volunteer for that role:
  • Head Coach
  • Referee
  • U8 Official
  • Assistant Coach
  • Team Manager
  • Board Member
The background check is performed by separately by an AYSO National vetted vendor as part of the registration process. Fingerprinting is only required once for any AYSO-affiliated program. If you had been fingerprinted in a prior season for any AYSO-affiliated program, it is not required again.

Open Recreation Program

This program is targeted for kids of all experience levels, including ones that have never played soccer before. This program does not require any tryouts so everybody is placed on a team as long as there is room. Games are played on Saturdays between other teams from Region 64 as well as some other local teams (for 10U Division and up) from the South Bay in our Area (www.ayso2j.org). Game times vary each weekend and are usually some time between 9am - 3pm for 8U Divisions and above. For 8U Divisions and up, once the weekday practice schedule is determined (usually about a week or two before the season starts), they will remain the same throughout the season, unless a practice needs to be moved or canceled due to unforeseen circumstances.

Practice Schedule Requests

When you register, you are asked what days (Mon-Fri) your child is available to practice during the week (for age groups 8U and above). We try and match your child to a team that meets your schedule to the extent possible, but this is NOT guaranteed. Your player's team and schedule details will be posted about a week before the start of the season and can be viewed by logging in to your account at www.ayso64.org and clicking on your player's team page.

NOTE: Practice schedules will not be known until a week before the start of the season and are dependent on volunteer coach schedules and field availability. If you register shortly before, or after the season starts, it will take a few days after you register to determine your schedule.

Teammate Requests

When you register, you have the option of requesting to be on the same team as one of your player's friends (aka Teammate Request). In order for a teammate request to be considered, it must be double-sided in that each player must request the other player (first and last name) as their teammate request. You can only request one teammate per player. Note that teammate requests are NOT GUARANTEED because there are many factors involved when putting together teams (e.g. coach's schedule, field availability, balancing teams, etc.). In addition, priority will be given to registered volunteers (head coaches, referees, 8U officials, assistant coaches, team managers) who have signed up and completed all requisite training and certifications prior to the start of the season and have been assigned to a team.

AYSO Philosophies

This program follows the six philosophies set by the National AYSO organization:
  • Everyone Plays - Our program's goal is for kids to play soccer so every player on every team must play at least 50% of every game.  In Region 64, we strive for 75% playing time for each player.
  • Balanced Teams - Each year we form new teams as evenly balanced as possible because it's more fun and a better learning experience when teams of similar ability play. It allows for each player to gain the experience of a wide variety of teammates of different skill levels.
  • Open Registration - The Open Recreation program is open to all children who want to register and play soccer. Interest and enthusiasm are the only criteria for playing. There are no elimination try-outs and nobody gets cut.
  • Positive Coaching - Encouragement of player effort provides for greater enjoyment for the players and leads to better-skilled and better-motivated players.
  • Good Sportsmanship - We strive to create a positive environment based on mutual respect rather than a win-at-all-costs attitude, and our program is designed to instill good sportsmanship in every facet of AYSO.
  • Player Development - We believe that all players should be able to develop their soccer skills and knowledge to the best of their abilities, both individually and as members of a team, in order to maximize their enjoyment of the game.
